Mrs Bridge

recommendation This short novel is something of a cult classic that I had been meaning to read for a long time and am now extremely glad I did. The short chapters behave as poignant vignettes that provide a brilliantly observed insight into the life of an upper-middle-class suburban housewife in 1930s Kansas. Connell manages to perfectly skewer many of the hypocrisies of American society at that time while also painting a vivid picture of an individual who is both ordinary and fascinating. I am now moving onto Mr Bridge, the sequel, with high hopes.
