Their
recommendation I just reread When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, which I last read as a child. I heard it discussed recently on James Naughtie’s Book Club on Radio 4, where the wonderful Judith Kerr was in the studio answering questions and she was incredible: wise, self-deprecating, funny, insightful. The book is written for children, and it made a huge impression on me as a child – but it deals with a very difficult subject, depicting the plight of the refugee, in this case from Hitler’s Germany before the war. In the way of the best children’s literature, you see through the simple story to the cataclysms in the adult world, while never leaving the perspective of Anna, the 11-year old narrator and the ‘adventure’ (as she sees it) that overtakes her and her family. It’s all the more powerful for being based on the real experience of the author; an important book, and one that’s not lost its relevance in todays fractured world. - Meryl
