Their
recommendation I first heard about Vango from Sarah Ardizzone who had just finished translating the book for Walker. She described a novel featuring a mysterious young man and a chase across Europe spanning two World Wars – I couldn’t wait to read it and wasn’t disappointed. Vango opens on the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral, where the titular hero is waiting to take Holy Orders. Suddenly the police arrive to arrest him on suspicion of murder, gunshots are fired and a bewildered Vango flees, scaling the cathedral to escape those pursuing him and a breath-taking adventure begins. The novel takes the reader from Paris to Italy, Germany and beyond as they try and piece together the mystery surrounding this boy…who is he and why is he being pursued so relentlessly? Beautifully written, heart stopping, mysterious and utterly original - I LOVED this novel. I advise you to buy part 2 at the same time as you will not want to wait to find out what happens next.
